6-Year old girl has leg amputated after vehicle rollover near Bloemfontein

A six-year-old girl is in a critical condition after she sustained a traumatic amputation of her leg during a vehicle rollover on the N1 this morning.

Shortly after 0800 paramedics arrived on the N1 approximately twenty kilometres outside of Bloemfontein towards Cholesberg where they found a vehicle in the veld next to the highway. It appeared as if the vehicle overturned several times before crashing through a wire fence in the veld. They [paramedics] found three people, including the six year old, with several injuries. It is believed all of them got out of the vehicle shortly after the incident.

A woman and a man, believed to be the parents of the girl, sustained several injuries including fractures. The six year old was found with a traumatic amputation of her leg. The AER24 DoH Free State helicopter was called to the scene to assist with the stabilisation and evacuation of the girl. She was later airlifted from the scene to Mediclinic Bloemfontein for further treatment. The man and the woman were both treated on the scene and transported by ambulance to the same hospital.

It is understood from the driver that he apparently swerved for a truck and lost control over the vehicle, however the exact cause of the incident is not yet known.
