Yesterday large storm clouds rolled in over almost the entire KZN area. KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics responded to several cases, where damage had been caused and injuries were sustained.
On the south coast there were patches of heavy rain with strong winds. Several thatch stalls on Margate beach front collapsed in the wind. Paramedics treated three patients who had been near- by for minor injuries. These patients were transported to hospital by paramedics from a private ambulance service.
Strong winds were reported in the Cato Ridge area by our paramedics in the area, while in the Pietermaritzburg area there were multiple reports regarding hail falling in the area, with some of the stones being larger than golf balls. Several trees were blown over including one in Langibalele Street.
Later in the evening at around 23h00 paramedics in the Uthungulu district responded to the Nkandla area, were approximately 10 houses were damaged. Paramedics also treated two patients who were in a serious condition after lightning struck near them. They were transported to Nkandla Hospital.
Disaster management teams were on standby last night and together with other government agencies will be going out to assess the damage this morning and provide assistance where needed.
