The fight against illegal firearms at Kranskop area continues and it yields positive results. Since 13 April 2015 police conducted a number of firearm raids in the Kranskop and the surrounding areas and recovered a total of 20 unlicensed firearms and arrested a total of ten suspects. Recovered firearms include AK47 rifles, 303 rifles, shotguns and 9mm pistols.
The last arrest was made on Friday, 24 April 2015 when Kranskop members assisted by National Intervention Unit raided a few houses at KwaMxosa and Mabomvini area for illegal firearms. Three suspects including a municipal official were arrested during these operations and were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. All three suspects aged between 41 and 49 are due to appear in the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 April 2015.
“I want to assure the community that we will continue to root out criminals in our society and will continue to tighten the screws on criminals. We will continue with such operations with the support from the community who give us valuable information about illegal firearms in their areas.
I also commend all members involved in such operations and encouraged them to continue with their good work,” said The Provincial Commissioner of Police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
The recovered firearms will be taken to ballistics to ascertain if the firearms were used in any commission of crime in the country.
