Department of Transport to launch Accident and Reconstruction Unit

In an attempt to curb road accidents, the Department of Transport is in the process of establishing an Accident and Reconstruction Unit (ARU). The unit’s main task is to identify both immediate and underlying causes of road accidents.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu revealed this during the Department of Transport’s 2015/16 budget speech which was delivered at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature today.

He said the unit will be made up of Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Officers who will receive highly specialised accident and investigation training wit help from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) funding.

“I am ecstatic about the establishment of this unit because it showcases the commitment of our government in fighting road carnages that have continuously taken the lives of innocent people in our province,” said Mchunu.

This unit is expected to start working by October 2015. Mchunu said it would operate in all four regions of the Department. “Sixteen Officers will receive training as well as eight specialised vehicles with highly specialised equipment,” said Mchunu.
