A joint operation by Durban Hawks and National Intervention Unit members made a breakthrough when they arrested a total of ten suspects in a house at Ramsgate area, Margate this morning. They were arrested after they were found with heroin to the street value of more than seven million rands. All arrested suspects aged between 22 and 29 years will appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 6 May 2015 for dealing in drugs.
After months of intense investigation by the Hawks, they uncovered a drug syndicate operating in a plush Ramsgate suburb in Margate. During the investigation it was discovered that it was a Durban based syndicate which had moved to South Coast. Investigations were completed and an intelligence driven operation was conducted. At about 8:00 in morning, the Hawks assisted by the National Intervention Unit armed with the search warrant raided the house and recovered about 120 000 readily packed straws of heroin and eight (8) kilograms of unpacked heroin to the value of more than R7 million. Ten occupants of the house were arrested and charged accordingly. The house was found to be a processing and packaging clandestine laboratory.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for their outstanding work that led to the arrest and recovery of drugs in South Coast area. “I also encourage the members of the community to continue providing valuable information to the police about drug activities in their areas,” she said.
