Illegal firearms confiscated in Engome area in KZN

An intelligence driven operation by the Greytown Crime Intelligence Unit and the POP Task Team has resulted in the arrest of a 67-year-old suspect for possession on an unlicensed firearm. In the early hours of this morning police proceeded to Hholwane area in uMsinga following investigations into illegal firearms in the area. On arrival at the suspect’s homestead an AK47 automatic rifle with 15 rounds of ammunition was recovered. The operation also resulted in the recovery of a single barrel shotgun, automatic rifle and 9mm pistol at Engome area. All the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistics examinations to establish if they were used in the commission of any crimes in the country. The suspect is expected to appear later today at the uMsinga Magistrates Court.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for their hard work which resulted in the arrest of the suspect and recovery of unlicensed firearms. “We will continue to conduct such raids for illegal firearms in the province and those found in possession of illegal firearms will be charged. It is unacceptable that such firearms are floating around our communities and I want to thank those members of the community that come forward with information and assist police in cleaning up their communities,” she said.
