Armed robbers arrested in shootout with police on N2

On 22 July 2015 at 16:00, Greenwood Park police officers were patrolling the N2 when they noticed a man being robbed at gunpoint by two men. When the suspects spotted police they opened fire on the officers; the police returned fire and arrested the two men who were injured in the shootout. The suspects were taken to hospital where they remain in a stable condition under police guard.

A 9mm pistol, found in their possession, was positively linked to a Greenwood Park case where a 37-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint on 24 May 2015 at 12:30, where the victim was in his vehicle on the N2 waiting for a friend. Three suspects approached him and demand cash before taking his cell phone, cash, firearm, laptop and clothes and fleeing the scene thereafter. A case of robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm was opened at the Greenwood Park police station for investigation.

The suspects aged 23 and 27 are expected to appear in court once they are released from hospital.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the Greenwood Park police members for the arrest and added, “We would like to send a clear message to all criminals that the law will take its course and there is no place to hide for criminals in our province. We will ensure that these thugs are profiled to ensure that they are charged for all crimes that they may have committed prior to their arrest”.
