A man in his 70s was killed and a man in his 20s critically last night after their vehicle plunged down an embankment off the R56 in Richmond, Pietermaritzburg.
When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found an SUV lying on its roof, 50 metres down an embankment.
Two lifeless bodies lay roughly ten and twenty metres away from the vehicle.
On assessment, paramedics found that the man in his 70s had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene.
The second patient, a male in his 20s, was found in a critical condition and suffering from severe hypothermia.
Treatment and advanced life support interventions were performed on the patient before he was carried back to the awaiting ambulance at the roadside.
The critically injured patient was transported by ambulance to Edendale Hospital for further treatment.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
