On 2 and 3 October 2015, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 295 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province. Thirteen road users, including seven pedestrians, died on the province’s roads over the weekend.
A total of 1 307 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 28 arrests were made.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West. At 1.14 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of blood, this is four times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 2 139 vehicles were screened for speeding and 246 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 231 fines in the amount of R351 900 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.
The highest recorded speeds were:
- 194 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
- 124 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
Eight other arrests were made:
- One for excessive speed in Mossel Bay.
- One for false documentation in Somerset West.
- Two for possession of narcotics in Vredendal.
- One for possession of dagga in Vredendal.
- Two for possession of 1 114 mandrax tablets, valued at R83 000 in Klawer.
- One for possession of dagga, tik, six diamonds and two sets of illegal number plates in Klawer.
