A man believed to be about 22 years of age sustained severe burn wounds earlier this afternoon in Oribi Village in Pietermaritzburg.
It is understood that the man went into a mini substation. It is unclear what he was doing in the room.
The transformer box exploded and the room set alight.
The man got out of the room. Members of the community tried to assist by cooling him down with water.
ER24 paramedics arrived on scene and found him close by to the mini substation. They assessed the man. He had sustained multiple severe burn wounds to the upper body.
He was treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.
Authorities were on scene. Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire at the mini substation.
