60mm Mortar shell removed from Inanda dam by police divers

KwaZulu-Natal – Yesterday Police Divers from Search and Rescue conducted a Dive Operation at Inanda dam after receiving information that an explosive device had been seen in the water by a person snorkeling.

A risk assessment dive was conducted and the Operation was suspended due to fading light. Divers from Durban Search and Rescue, Pietermaritzburg Explosives unit, Newcastle Explosives unit and members from Durban Explosives unit returned at first light today and continued the search.

A 60mm Mortar shell was located and removed from the dam. Due to its condition the Explosives Unit conducted a controlled detonation on the shoreline destroying the ordnance.
