Five people were injured, two of them critically, in a head on collision between two cars in the early hours of this morning.
The incident occurred on the N3 highway by the Vosloorus offramp.
ER24 paramedics, Fire and Rescue and other services attended to the scene and found all patients still in the vehicles. However only the drivers of each vehicle were trapped.
Fire and Rescue extricated the drivers. Upon assessment it was found that one driver, a male who was the only person in the vehicle, was in a critical condition.
The other driver, a female believed to be between the ages of 50 and 60, sustained moderate injuries.
The front passenger and a back passenger also sustained moderate injuries however one of the other passengers was in a critical condition.
All patients were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.
The exact cause of the incident is unknown.
Authorities were on scene for further investigations.
