A baby was left in a critical condition and upwards of 10 people were injured this morning after a collision involving a taxi and a truck on the N17 West by Rondebult Road, East of Johannesburg.
This morning just after 8am EMER-G-MED paramedics as well as various other services responded to the scene, arriving to find that a taxi had rolled off the highway after colliding with a truck – leaving passengers strewn across the area.
An infant sustained critical injuries and required immediate Advanced Life Support interventions. The baby was stabilised while the Netcare911 Aeromedical helicopter was activated to airlift the 5-month-old to a specialist paediatric trauma centre, in Johannesburg.
Several other patients also sustained serious injuries and required Advanced Life Support care, while the remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries. These patients were treated on-scene before being transported by road to various nearby hospitals for further care.
The highway was closed completely to allow the helicopter to land and take off safely.
The exact events preceding the crash are still under investigation by local authorities.
