Two men were killed and a child sustained moderate injuries after a car crashed into a channel along Rudolf Greyling Street in East End, Bloemfontein.
At approximately 9.30pm paramedics from ER24, Life Rosepark and local Fire & EMS services arrived on the scene where they found the car about five meters down the embankment partially submerged in water.
One person was found on the side of the embankment with fatal injuries. It is believed that he was ejected from the vehicle. Paramedics also found a young child on the scene with moderate injuries. It is not clear if the child was ejected from the vehicle or removed by bystanders on the scene. He was later transported to a nearby hospital by another service.
Paramedics from ER24 made their way down the embankment towards the car where they found another man. He was lying partially submerged in the water and was in a critical condition. He sustained severe chest injuries. Local Fire & EMS was called to the scene to assist with hoisting the patient up the embankment.
While paramedics were busy hoisting the patient up the embankment, his condition suddenly deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics initiated CPR. They worked for almost an hour to revive the man, sadly, he was later declared dead.
The exact cause for the incident is not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene.
