On Thursday morning t 07h48 Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a collision on the R603 about two kilometres past the Eston service station. Reports from the scene indicate that a taxi and a truck collided head-on, exact detail to the cause however will form part of the police investigation.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the roadway littered with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles, consistent with that of a high impact collision. After investigating they found that some of the injured were still trapped in the wreckage of the taxi, one person died, four were in a critical condition and five miraculously escaped with minor injuries.
One of the critically injured went into cardiac arrest at the scene and despite the efforts from the paramedics the person died at the scene due to the extensive injuries that she sustained. The other patients were treated at the scene before medics transported them to hospitals in Pietermaritzburg for the care that they required.
