At 14h00 on Sunday afternoon Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call for a boy that had fallen down a steep embankment in Shallcross, Chatsworth. Reports from the scene indicate that children were playing near the railway bridge in Shallcross, indications are the boy was hit by a rock against the head, he then fell 400 metres down a 45-degree embankment.
Paramedics and their rescue officer arrived at the scene and found the child to have sustained life-threatening injuries. Medics worked fervently at the scene to stabilise the child and after he was placed on a ventilator and spinally immobilised, they had to carry the critically wounded boy back up the embankment to where the ambulance was waiting.
The critically wounded boy was then transported to a specialised hospital in Durban under the constant care of an advanced life support paramedic.
