Know more about Burns during Burns Awareness Week!

Sister Mokhele, who is a Professional Nurse at Pelonomi’s Burns Section will be live on Lesedi FM with Tholoana “Thuli Baby” Moletsane at 11:35am this Monday morning, 8 May 2017 to discuss the Burns Awareness Week which runs from 6 May to 12 May 2017. This comes ahead of the Winter Season which often renders children and minors especially vulnerable to burn injuries.

In observance of National Burns Awareness Week from 6 – 12 May, the Free State MEC for Health, Butana Komphela encourages the public to help defeat the social stigma attached to children living with burns.

Burn injuries happen in seconds but may have a lifelong impact on victims. It is one of the most common and devastating forms of trauma and has the potential to cause death, lifelong scarring, disfigurement, dysfunction and disability – often resulting in prolonged hospitalisation, stigma and rejection.

MEC Komphela takes this opportunity to urge the communities to be on the high alert during this upcoming winter season to prevent burns amongst children even amongst adults. He urged the health professionals to do more that the ordinary measures to take care of burn victims and health promoters to increase public awareness and education.
