Port Elizabeth – In addressing trio crimes as outlined by the National Trio Crime Action Plan, a 24-year-old suspect was arrested by the Gelvandale Trio Task Team for house robbery and rape.
It is alleged that during the early hours of Monday morning, 28 August 2017 two suspects kicked open a door at a house in Barcelona in Gelvandale. The four occupants were locked in a room while the suspects ransacked the house. Cash, a TV, cell phones and other household items were taken. A 25-year-old female was allegedly raped by one suspect. At about 13:30, the same day, Gelvandale detective members arrested the suspect in Reynecke Street. Some cash and two cell phones were found in his possession.
He was detained for house robbery, rape, and possession of the suspected stolen property. The case is being investigated by the Port Elizabeth Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga added that’ crimes relating to gender based violence is a priority for the SAPS and perpetrators will be harshly dealt with. The swift arrest by Gelvandale detective members is an indication that the SAPS is serious in combating serious and violent crimes against women, children and the vulnerable.’
