Approximately 15 homes were destroyed following a fire at an informal settlement in Canelands – Verulam this morning.
At approximately 08:25 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by residents reporting the fire. Upon arrival several informal homes were found engulfed in flames. Officers evacuated residents from their homes as the fire spread rapidly through the settlement. The Ethekwini Fire & Rescue Services arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.
It is alleged that the fire began due to an illegal electricity connection however this is yet to be confirmed. No one was injured in the fire.
