Yesterday at approximately 08:18 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by a frantic woman reporting the accident. Upon arrival the mangled body of the deceased was found lying on the train tracks. Her internal organs were strewn several metres away from the point of impact.
It is alleged that the deceased and her daughter in law made a living by collecting scrap metal. Shortly after selling a load of used cans they decided to proceed to their home which is situated at an informal settlement on Stonebridge Drive in Phoenix. As the two were crossing the railway line a train approached. The deceased attempted to cross but fell in the process. She was then crushed by the train.
Police are investigating further.
