Since Amber’s fatal accident that happened just around the corner from our offices, we have been working on a campaign to make the horses and drivers more visible on the roads.
Simply Workwear kindly sponsored 200 of these high-visibility vests and we are handing them out to drivers in an effort to create awareness of horses on the roads. The carties are very proud of their “bibs”.
Horses are not machines and can get frightened when cars pass too close or too fast. It is imperative to slow down when you are approaching a horse on the road. Horses – especially when pulling a load – cannot stop as fast as a car and if a car does not give them enough stopping room by braking close to them, it is very likely the horse will run into the back of the car as they simply cannot stop fast enough.
It is also important to remember that according to the by-laws of the City of Cape Town, animal-drawn vehicles have right of way!
We have also had T-shirts printed that we are selling at R200 (excluding postage) to horse riders who would like to be more visible on the road as well as bumper stickers that horsey people can stick on their cars.
