A woman who was robbed and dragged into a bush managed to fight off her attacker near the Ottawa intersection in Verulam this morning.
Director of Reaction Unit South Africa Vinod Balram was on patrol in the area when he was flagged down by the hysterical woman. She explained that she was employed at a call centre in Cornubia and decided to walk to her home in Parkgate after she had finished working night shift.
As she approached the intersection she was confronted by a man dressed in kaki shorts, a black shirt and a black cap. He dragged her into the bush along the R102. The 24-year-old believes that the suspect intended raping her. She fought off the man as he dragged her further into the dense bush.
He then stole her handbag containing a Samsung J1 cellphone, identity book and a wallet before fleeing on foot. Backup was called to the scene and Officers entered the bush in search of the suspect, however, no arrests were made.
The victim sustained abrasions to her hands from being dragged however she refused medical attention.
