A 17-year-old boy has drowned while swimming at an excavation site on Hazelmere Road near Mhlasini Area 2 in Verulam a short while ago.
At approximately 12:05 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by the public requesting assistance for the boy who was dragged out of the water by one of his friends. Upon arrival the teenager was assessed by medics. He showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.
It is alleged that the deceased resides in Ndwedwe – KZN with an aunt. He was visiting his mum and step dad for the long weekend. This morning he and four other boys aged between 8 & 18 decided to swim in the excavation site that filled up with water over a period of time. While swimming he started experiencing difficulty resulting in him drowning.
The deceased’s identity has been established and his next of kin has been advised.
