In response to the shock of nine murders and three attempted murders believed to be taxi related in Cape Town that started late yesterday into the early hours of this morning, Western Cape police have set up a detective-led task team to probe these incidents. Last night two suspects aged 39 and 45 were arrested in Gugulethu and two unlicensed firearms seized following a shooting incident in Wynberg where taxi drivers were shot at.
The incidents are as follows:
Ø In Nyanga at Borcheds Quarry a man in his forties was shot and fatally wounded at 17:45 on 25 May 2018.
Ø A 35-year-old man and a commuter were shot and wounded on the corner of Emms drive and Terminus road.
Ø At Wynberg yesterday afternoon about 16:00, a 28-year-old man was shot and wounded at Murom road, Wynberg. Two men ages 39 and 45 were arrested and two firearms were seized in Gugulethu in connection with the attempted murder in Wynberg.
Ø Philippi East, a 43-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded at Govan Mbeki.
Ø Philippi East at 18:30 on 25 May 2018 at Ncinciba Street, Luzuko Park, a 26-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded.
Ø Philippi East at Govan Mbeki, Lower Cross roads, about 19:45, a 27-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded.
Ø Philippi East at 20:10 last night at the corner of New Eisleben road and Sheffield, an unidentified man, a taxi driver, was shot and fatally wounded.
Ø Another unidentified taxi driver was shot and fatally wounded today just after 12:00 at Luzuko, Philippi East.
Ø Nyanga, in the early hours if this morning at Sonwabile Street, Old Cross road. A taxi driver was shot and fatally wounded.
Ø At Entokozweni Street, Old Cross road, a taxi driver was shot and fatally wounded.
Meanwhile Tactical Response, National Intervention Units teams are deployed at identified hotspots as reaction forces to complement station deployments. Emergency meetings with role players in the transport sector, City of Cape Town, traffic services, SAPS and other law enforcement agencies are underway in an effort to determine the source of the violent incidents. Police have vowed to clamp on all taxi related violence including the latest cases. Anyone with information about these incidents is requested to contact the police on 08600 10111.
