A 21-year-old unlicensed driver crashed after he almost ran over two people on Russom Street – Verulam this afternoon.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa witnessed the incident where the driver of the Nissan Sentra was seen speeding along a narrow road. The vehicle narrowly missed colliding into two pedestrians.
Reaction Officers attempted to stop the vehicle however the driver sped off. Officers pursued the vehicle towards the steel bridge. When the driver noticed traffic at the single lane bridge he attempted to turn into Estuary Drive. Due to the excessive speed, he failed to negotiate a sharp bend and climbed an embankment. The vehicle became airborne and crashed. The driver got off the vehicle and attempted to flee but was apprehended by Reaction Officers.
He initially claimed that he was in possession of a learners license however later admitted that it had expired. A replica 9mm Beretta pistol was recovered on the passenger seat. The driver informed Officers that the weapon and the vehicle belonged to his late brother.
The driver was not injured however his vehicle was extensively damaged in the accident.
