A 3-week Winter School Camp, wholly-sponsored by Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited, ended on Friday in rural Cala, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The Camp was attended by more than a hundred (100) matric learners from Cala, DM Skhosana, Bathandwa Ndondo, Jentile, Masikuthale, Hoerskool Elliot, Indwe, Stanger, Deaconhurst and Sfondile Secondary Schools.
The on-going ATNS Winter School Programme, launched in 2016, is part of ATNS’s annual Mandela Month Corporate Social Investment Projects and is intended to enhance learner performance in Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography and English.
To date, ATNS has sponsored Winter Schools camps in three Provinces. In 2016, ATNS, supported by the Go-Mathematics Foundation, hosted a hundred (100) Grade 12 learners from Tong and Setswakgosing Secondary Schools in the Ganyesa area, near Vryburg, North West Province. Ventersburg Intermediate High School accommodated a hundred and sixty-two (162) learners from sixteen (16) high schools in the Lejweleputswa District, Free State in 2017.
The ATNS Winter School Camps are run in conjunction with Provincial Education Departments and local Municipalities. The full sponsorship package includes securing and payment of specialist tutors, meals and accommodation. ATNS also has specialists on-site, to advise learners on teenage pregnancy and sexual abuse.
ATNS CEO, Thabani Mthiyane says skills required in the aviation industry have become progressively scarce. “To address this phenomena, ATNS is on a drive to ensure that previously disadvantaged individuals are not only given opportunities to join the mainstream economy, but become part of pool of prospective employees available for selection by the company in core aviation industry careers such as Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Systems Engineering” said Mthiyane.
Over three-hundred 300 learners have benefitted immensely from this Programme.
