Western Cape: While on patrol in the Steenberg area, vigilant members attached to Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 19 year old man for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On 2018-07-17 at about 02:30 members on patrol saw a suspicious looking man at St Barnabas Street, St Montague Village, when he saw the police he started running. Police members gave chase, caught up with him and searched him. Members found in his possession a Norinco 9mm pistol one magazine with eight live 9mm rounds. A 19 year old suspect was arrested.
In an unrelated incident on 2018-07-18 members of Steenberg Crime Intelligence office received information about possible firearms at an address in Lavender Hill. Members of Steenberg SAPS and Operation Thunder then proceeded to an address in Grindel Avenue, Lavender Hill. Upon searching the premises members found a 9mm Star firearm with the serial number filed off, one 9mm magazine and four 9mm rounds.
Four suspects age 18, 21, 30 and 57 respectively were arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, and the illegal possession of ammunition
These suspects are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 2018-07-20 on the said charges.
