ATM robbery suspect arrested

A 57 year old KwaMashu – KZN resident who claimed to be impotent was arrested after he stole an ATM card from an individual attempting to withdraw cash in Verulam a short while ago (Saturday).

At approximately 12:05 a member of Reaction Unit South Africa was on patrol in the vicinity when he was flagged down by the victim. He explained that he was about to use the ATM when he noticed that the machine was not accepting his card. The person that used the ATM before him returned and asked him if he required assistance.

The victim asked him if he by any chance had not removed his card which was probably jamming the machine. The suspect who was in the company of three other men distracted the victim and stole his ATM card. The victim realised that he was being scammed and stopped the suspect before flagging down the RUSA Member. His accomplices fled the scene. The ATM card belonging to the victim was found in his possession (picture 3).

While being interviewed the suspect informed Officers that he was impotent and had taken a taxi from KwaMashu to purshase sexual enhancement tablets from a pharmacy in Verulam. Several other bank cards were found in his possession. He is believed to be part of a syndicate that targets people using the ATM at busy shopping centres.

The suspect was placed under arrest and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation
