Seventeen suspects have been arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property following protests at Mlungisi Township. This afternoon at about 13:00 a truck that is carrying juice was set alight by a group of protesters. The SAPS are monitoring the situation and patrolling the surrounding areas. No persons have been injured.
“These acts of criminality are strongly condemned and police will continue to take a zero tolerance approach against the perpetrators,” said Brigadier Luntu Ngubelanga the King Williamstown Cluster Commander.
Although the road is open, sporadic incidents are being reported. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes until the situation normalises.
The arrested suspects are due to appear at Stutterheim Magistrates’ Court soon.
