Police arrest one suspect and fatally wound another following shootout

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended police members for their continuous efforts in working towards the normalization of the crime situation in the Province. This after one suspect was arrested and another fatally wounded during a shootout between these criminals and the police.

It is alleged that on 10 January 2018 at about 10:00, the Dennilton Task Team of the South African Police Service received information from members of the community about a suspicious motor vehicle at the local Mall.

The members reacted swiftly and found a BMW with three (03) occupants and approached them. The suspects allegedly started shooting at the Police who retaliated. During the shootout, one of these suspects managed to jump into one of the police vehicles that was part of this snap operation and sped off. The other suspects fled on foot.

An intense search operation for the suspects and the police vehicle was then activated until one of the suspects was arrested within a short space of time. The tracing of the remaining suspects continued until one was found. He allegedly started shooting at the Police who retaliated and during the process, this suspect was fatally wounded.

One firearm, a BMW sedan and the Police car were recovered at different locations.

The search operation for the remaining suspect is still underway. The origin of this firearm and a BMW will still be determined by the ongoing Police investigations. The deceased has not yet been identified.

No member of the South African Police Service was injured. Charges of attempted murder, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition, carjacking and Inquest were opened for further police investigations.

The arrested suspect aged 32, will appear before the Dennilton Magistrate Court soon.

The Police investigations are still continuing.

The Provincial Commissioner has expressed his appreciation to the members of the community who are consistently supporting the police in providing quality and reliable information about the criminal activities in and around their areas. “The support we continue to receive from our different communities contributes immensely towards the fight against crime,” concluded General Ledwaba.
