31 Year old Jeneve Venkatido was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after she attempted to murder her new born son on Olivine Road in Everest Heights – Verulam today.
RUSA Operations Center received a call from a member of public requesting assistance after a local scrap collector heard a baby crying in a bin packet that was tied and dumped on the side of the road.
Upon arrival Medics found the baby in the bin packet wrapped in a denim garment. They cut the umbilical cord which was still attached to the placenta. The child was examined and found to be free of injury. While examining the baby boy a municipal bin truck drove past the scene. The occupants of the truck were in the process of uplifting bin bags which were left for collection on the road side. Had the child not been found in time he would have been thrown into the back of the truck. The baby was transported to hospital for further medical attention and was found to be in good health & weighed in just over two kilograms.
Reaction Officers made enquiries regarding an Indian female who was pregnant in the area. Information received was that the a woman living approximately 100 meters away from where the child was dumped was seen walking away from the bin packet.
Acting on the information RUSA Members approached the woman who initially denied allegations of her being pregnant or attempting to murder her child. After extensive questioning she finally admitted that she concealed her pregnancy for nine months due to her children being from two different fathers.
After going into labour this morning she managed to naturally deliver the baby in her bathroom while her 11 year old son & nine year old daughter were at school and her parents were at work.
She then wrapped the child in a denim garment, placed him in bin packet which she tied and dumped on the side off the road near her house. She then cleaned her bathroom in an attempt to conceal the birth. He parents were called to the scene and claimed that they had no knowledge of the pregnancy.
Venkatido was placed under arrest and handed over to Police. She will face charges of attempted murder and child abandonment.
