Anti-Gang Unit members work through the night to arrest four suspects and seize firearms and drugs in Bishop Lavis

In a concerted effort targeting unlicensed firearms that underpin shooting incidents, Anti-Gang Unit members executed a number of operations in the early hours of this morning in the Bishop Lavis area. Just after 01:00 this morning they descended on the corner of Bishop Lavis Drive and Sparrow Street where they seized an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and arrested two male suspects aged 49 and 24.

Within minutes, not very far from the first address they arrived at Malawi informal settlement and seized two other firearms, magazines, rounds of ammunition, firearm parts and a substantial quantity of Tik. In this operation they arrested a 23-year-old male suspect.

In the third location, members of the Unit seized an assortment of Mandrax tablets, 57 magnum rounds of ammunition, Tik Crystal pebbles and arrested a 22-year-old suspect.

The suspects will be charged with illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and dealing drugs. They will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court soon.

The efforts of the Unit are commended by the provincial SAPS management as they continue to make inroads in dealing with gang violence and its manifestations.
