Police arrested five suspects, recovered an unlicensed firearm and a hijacked vehicle in a foiled armed robbery at BP garage in Melrose today.
Police received information about the armed gang planning to rob the BP garage at Corlett Drive, in Melrose.
The suspects, fitting the description circulated, were spotted parking two vehicles at the garage, a grey Toyota Etios and a grey Nissan Almera.
As police were approaching, one of the suspects alighted from one of the vehicles and pulled a firearm. The suspect was shot in the leg by the police.
All the suspects were cornered and arrested on the spot. Preliminary investigation revealed that one of the vehicles was recently hijacked in Jeppestown.
Investigation is continuing to establish if these suspects are linked to other serious and violent crimes.
