An intelligence-driven operation where police worked very closely with the community, has led to the recovery of six high calibre firearms – five rifles and one shotgun.
The integrated team comprising of members from the SAPS and the EMPD, on Friday 12 April 2019 operationalised information received about illegal firearms at Angelo Squatter Camp in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.
No suspects have been arrested as the firearms were found abandoned in a vehicle. An investigation is underway and police are optimistic that suspects who are unknown at this stage, could be arrested soon pending forensic processing of the firearms.
Other than these firearms, police also found live ammunition of various calibre firearms.
This success has been hailed by management of police in the Province as a significant blow to serious and violent crime. While metropolitan cities in Gauteng remain below the national average of serious and violent crime in relation to the latest edition of the “State of Urban Safety in South Africa Report”; police will not be complacent but will rather remain resolute in the strife to reduce the volumes of crime in line with the Provincial Commissioner’s six priorities.
The Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela is particularly pleased as “the recovery of firearms means the thwarting of murders, hijackings, house and business robberies, and many other serious and violent crimes.”
