KHAYELITSHA – Members of the Maitland Flying Squad acted swiftly in their continuous efforts to prevent and combat crime that affects Western Cape communities by swiftly arresting three suspects in the Khayelitsha area.
Yesterday at about 16:50, members were busy conducting crime prevention patrols in Bonga Drive, Khayelitsha when they were stopped by a member of the community who needed their assistance. He then informed the members that three male suspects, driving in a grey Peugeot, attempted to hijack him and one pointed him with a firearm. The members immediately drove further down the road and spotted the suspects’ vehicle. As they approached the vehicle, the suspects drove off and the members gave chase. In their attempt to evade arrest, the suspects fired shots at the members upon which members returned fire resulting in one suspect being wounded. The driver of the grey Peugeot lost control of the vehicle and as a result, collided with a white LDV and knocked over a pedestrian. The vehicle eventually came to a standstill when it drove into a fence of a house in Bonkolo Street, Khayelitsha.
A Norinco 9mm pistol was seized and booked in as an exhibit. The suspects, aged between 23 and 33, were arrested on charges of attempted murder, attempted hijacking, possession of a firearm, possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear at Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 14 November 2019 on the mentioned charges.
