A multi-disciplinary intelligence-driven operation was carried out by various units within the SAPS at Kranskop in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The operation was conducted at Shikishela which falls under the Kranskop policing precinct. The aim of the operation was to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms in the area. The team proceeded to identified homesteads where searches were conducted.
A total of seven illegal firearms, as well as 89 rounds of ammunition, were seized at various homesteads. Four suspects aged between 39 and 62 were placed under arrest for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The firearms seized, included a shotgun; rifle; pistols and revolvers. The men are expected to appear in the Kranskop Magistrates Court tomorrow.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the arrest of the suspects. “Such operations are still ongoing in the province to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms which also contributes to serious and violent crimes,” he said.
