DURBAN – A 30-year-old suspect is appearing at the Durban Magistrates Court today after he was found with a firearm in his possession. Yesterday afternoon, police officers from the EThekwini Central Trio Task Team were conducting an operation in the Cato Manor policing precinct, searching for house robbery and rape suspects.
On 13 April 2020 at 04:00, siblings were allegedly attacked by three unknown armed males at their home in Wiggins. The suspects ransacked the house and found the safe, but it could not be opened as they could not find the key. They then took the victim out of the house and repeatedly raped her before fleeing. A case of house robbery and rape was opened at the Cato Manor police station for investigation.
Police commenced their investigation which led them to Dunbar Road where three men were spotted. The suspects fled into different directions and one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the police officers. During the confrontation, the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to hospital where he was treated and discharged. Police seized a pistol with five rounds of ammunition. He was charged for being in illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as pointing of a firearm. Investigations to link him to the house robbery and rape case are continuing.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended police officers for the arrest and seizure of a firearm.
