We all know when the temperature drops, it is time to get your vehicle ready for winter.
We have put together some vehicle maintenance tips to prepare your vehicle for winter and to ensure your safety on the road.
1. Battery
• Temperature plays an important role, as the temperature drops the battery power reduces, affecting the ability to provide power to start the vehicle.
• Ensure the battery terminals are free from corrosion.
• If you are not driving on a regular basis, start your vehicle every few days.
2. Tyres
• Worn-down tyres reduce stability and increase the braking distance.
• To ensure your safety, measure the tread depth with a coin. If they are flush with the level of the tread your tyres must be replaced.
• Check your tyre pressure regularly. Tyres lose their pressure faster in winter temperatures.
3. Wiper Blades
• When wiper blades no longer make proper contact with the windshield surface, they can begin to squeak, chatter, skip, or streak reducing driving visibility.
• If your wiper blades do not perform well anymore, you should consider replacing them.
4. Winter Safety Kit
• When traveling ensure that you have the following tools and supplies in your vehicle:
Ø Warm clothing
Ø Jumper Cables
Ø Water
Ø Flashlight + Batteries
Ø First Aid Kit
Ø Extra Antifreeze
Ø Tool Kit
5. Fluids
• Maintain fluid levels regularly
• Change oil and antifreeze, regular maintenance on your vehicle can help prevent any car troubles during winter.
• Keep the fuel tank at least half full, this will reduce condensation and prevent corrosion in the future.
6. Lights
• Ensure all your lights are in working condition and that the headlights are switched off when you have reached your destination.
7. Brakes
• During colder months it is important that your braking system is in good working condition to ensure your safety on the road.
8. Heater & Defroster
• Ensure these are in good working condition to reduce condensation on the windshield to improve the driver’s visibility.
