This morning, 19 June 2020, at approximately 08:00, members attached to the Paarl Public Order Police (POPS) unit were on their way to Hermanus for deployment when they were stopped by an unknown vehicle in the Botriver area. They were informed by the occupant that a white Opel Corsa bakkie heading towards Cape Town was transporting illegal abalone.
The members made a U-turn in pursuit of the suspected vehicle and, upon noticing the members approaching, the occupant of the vehicle stopped, got out of the vehicle and tried to flee the scene on foot.
A total of 5576 units of abalone were confiscated and the suspect, a 27-year-old male, was subsequently arrested. He is expected to appear in court soon on possession of abalone charges.
