DURBAN – The Mpumalanga area has been engulfed with killings and other crimes due to the proliferation of illegal firearms. Yesterday, Sunday 21 June 2020, Mpumalanga police officers embarked on an operation in Mpumalanga and surrounding areas when they spotted a suspicious vehicle with three occupants traveling in the upper Sankontshe area.
The police officers immediately approached the vehicle with three occupants. One of the occupants in the vehicle immediately jumped out of the vehicle when he saw the police officers. A search was then conducted and firearms were found in the suspect’s possession. A total of 26 rounds of ammunition was also seized by police. The two suspects aged 35 and 45 were placed under arrest for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police seized the suspect’s cellphones for further investigation. They will also be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any serious crime. The suspects are expected to appear in the Mpumalanga Magistrates’ Court today for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
