PRETORIA – Lwandle Fanuel Mkhonto (48), a former attorney based in Johannesburg appeared at the Palmridge Magistrate Court on Monday, 31 August 2020 for R662 000 fraud.
Mkhonto was arrested by the #Hawks Commercial Crime Investigation team following allegations that he misappropriated Road Accident Fund (RAF) which were to be paid to his client. He allegedly used the funds for his personal gain.
The victim in this instance was a cyclist who was knocked over by a truck in March 1998 and is now living with a disability. Over R1.2 million was allegedly paid into Mkhonto’s trust account upon approval by the RAF and in August 2008 the victim was only paid a total of R200 000 and suffered a loss of over R600 000.
The case against Mkhonto, who has since been struck of the roll of attorneys, was postponed to the 06 October 2020 whilst he was released on R5000 bail.
