Two Ethiopian nationals were nabbed after they attempted to scam two separate cashiers at a cash and carry in the Verulam.
The men entered the business and each took items valued under R10. They proceeded to different cashiers and each paid with an R200 note. After receiving R190 change the men informed the cashiers that they have coins and would rather pay with the smaller denomination and have their R200 notes back.
Generally, distracted cashiers will hand the R200 back forgetting to collect the R190 change. If caught out the suspects usually apologise claiming that it was an honest mistake and will return the change.
In today’s incident, both cashiers caught up with the scam and remembered that the men had previously used the same con and got away with the “change”. The store was in possession of footage of the same two men from a previous incident.
Reaction Unit South Africa was contacted and Officers were dispatched to the premises.
Business owners and cashiers are to be wary of this con as suspects generally target distracted employees.
