Police apprehend suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition

Members of Public Order Policing arrested a 30-year-old suspects for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the early hours of Friday morning, 13 November 2020 in Kanana.

The suspect was arrested after the police followed a lead regarding a man, who was allegedly threatening to kill a person at the railway line. Furthermore the suspect fled from the police when he saw them approaching. Whilst chasing the suspect, he was seen throwing a firearm on top of a roof of a nearby house. Police apprehended the suspect, found ammunition inside his bag and recovered the discarded firearm.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 16 November 2020 for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Initial investigation indicated that the firearm is the property of a male from Welkom, who passed away in 2011.
