Members of the media are invited to a Webinar on Gender-based Violence in the public transport sector that will be hosted by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Mme Dikeledi Magadzi.

Mme Magadzi will be joined during the webinar by Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Deputy Minister, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, Sonke Justice Policy Development and Advocacy Coordinator, Zanele Mabaso, People Opposed to Women Abuse Gender-Based ViolencemActivist, Sidwell Sehoana and Love Life Chief Executive Officer Dr. Linda Ncube-Nkomo.

Violence against women is a grave violation of women’s human rights, no matter when, where, or how it takes place. This can result in injuries and serious physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health problems, including sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and unplanned pregnancies. In extreme cases, violence against women can result in death.

Sexual harassment and assault on public transport is an international and national daily occurrence and the incidents involved may range from the relatively “mild” to
the “very serious”. The main dangers women face in public transportation range from forms such as catcalling, unwanted attention, inappropriate physical contact, aggressive advances from strangers, and a range of other invasive sexualized behaviors. There have been widespread reports of women generally being jeered at, physically assaulted and stripped of their clothes in public throughout South Africa.

Attitudes and behaviour are among some of the key factors that drive crime and particularly violence against women. The webinar will look at some of these attitudes and behaviours from a public transport perspective.
