Four wood and iron homes and all of their contents were completely destroyed in a fire on Larwood Road in Canelands this morning (Monday).
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received multiple calls from residents of the informal settlement reporting the incident. All available Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene and on arrival found the homes engulfed in flames.
Due to the possibility that the fire may spread, Reaction Officers and residents removed household items from surrounding homes. The fire was extinguished by the Ethekwini Fire Department on their arrival.
It was established that one of the homes gutted in the fire belonged to a man whose body was found hanging from a tree yesterday.
