PARKTOWN –The South African Police Service (SAPS) Lyttelton arrested two suspects and fatally wounded one during a high-speed car chase and shootout.
On Monday morning, 07 December 2020 just after 09:00, members from Lyttelton SAPS who were on routine patrol in Doringkloof, identified suspicious activity in the area; a silver Mazda double cab bakkie with three occupants. According to a preliminary report, an intelligence-driven investigation identified a similar vehicle reportedly being used in the commission of housebreakings in the area.
The members attempted to conduct a stop and search, but the vehicle sped off; a high-speed car chase ensued along the N1 highway. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the members; back-up was summoned.
Upon approaching the Atterbury off-ramp, the SAPS members successfully intercepted the suspects’ vehicle. One of the suspects was shot and died on the scene. The other two suspects, aged 30 and 34, were arrested; they are allegedly residents of Mamelodi. Inside the suspects’ vehicle, housebreaking implements and an unlicensed firearm was recovered.
On further investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle utilised by the suspects had been reported stolen.
The suspects will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and housebreaking equipment. Further investigation is underway to determine whether the suspects may be linked to other crimes.
The Gauteng Provincial management commended the police officers for their vigilance and bravery in the execution of their duty. The private security companies who also responded when police called for back-up are also thanked; a collaborative approach in fighting crime is always encouraged. The criminals will feel the heat in Gauteng as the SAPS is out in full force in ensuring a safer festive season.
