Man killed in a shooting incident in Verulam

A 37-year-old man was shot and killed by unknown suspects this morning in area 4 informal settlement in Verulam – Kwazulu Natal.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Headquarters received a call from a member of the public requesting assistance for the injured man.

On arrival of Reaction Officers and Paramedics found the injured man lying in a prone position next to a boundary wall on a pathway. Medics assessed the patient and found that he had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. The patient showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on the scene.

According to the witnesses on the scene, three male suspects who are unknown to them were noticed roaming around the area earlier. The residents decided to form a group and approach the suspicious men. Minutes later they noticed one of the men carrying a flat-screen TV. Believing he had stolen the TV, The group attempted to intercept the suspect. Two of his accomplices approached from the rear and opened fire. As the suspects fled they then heard more shots being fired. They then noticed that one of the men in the group was missing. They conducted a search for the missing man and found him bleeding profusely from a head wound and unresponsive. They then contacted RUSA for assistance.

The deceased was identified as Bongani Trevor Sithole.
