Suspect arrested after robbing pedestrians in Durban

A 24-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Durban Magistrates’ Court today for robbery and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. In the early hours of yesterday morning, Durban Central police responded to a report of a robbery.

The complainant alleged that he and his friend were walking along Warwick Avenue in Durban looking for transport to take them to their residence. They approached three men who were standing next to a Toyota Quantum and informed them that they needed transport. The suspects attacked them and robbed them of their belongings. The victims sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

Police who were performing crime prevention operations in the vicinity responded and one suspect was arrested after the victim pointed him out. Some of their belongings and a cellphone were recovered in the possession of the suspect. The other two suspects are still at large and police are working tirelessly to locate them.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya commended Durban Central police for their swift arrest. “We are confident that the outstanding suspects who are still at large will be arrested soon,” he said.
