A 67-year-old man was shot during a robbery at Standard Bank on Gopaulall Hurbans in Tongaat.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the bank at approximately 11:26. On arrival, the elderly male was found lying in the vicinity of the Automated Teller Machines. He sustained a single gunshot wound to his left thigh and was treated for his injury on the scene, then transported to the hospital in a stable condition by ambulance.
According to witnesses, three men dressed in blue overalls were seen approaching a customer as he was about to enter the bank. After they failed to catch up to him they turned to customers waiting in line to use the ATM. One suspect asked the victim to hand over his valuables when a shot went off. The suspects then fled empty-handed. Some witnesses reported that a blue VW Polo sped off from the scene while other reports indicated that the getaway vehicle was a blue Hyundai. A 9mm cartridge was recovered at the scene.
Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search for the robbers however they still remain at large.
