It is a known factor that Human Trafficking is taking centre stage in many countries across the world. It is estimated that globally, around 21 million people fall prey to such unjust experience and South Africa is no exception.
On Wednesday, 17 March 2021, the Eastern Cape Roadshow Team grabbed the attention of learners and educators during their visit to Mazizini Senior Secondary School in Qeqe Locality, In Idutywa.
This visit proved to be both fruitful and worthwhile as learners were educated about cyberspace and child trafficking. Substance abuse, gender-based violence and femicide (domestic violence) and stock theft were also part of the day’s topic.
The team utilized the platform to introduce the Junior Commissioner Project to ensure safer schools and compliance with the Safer Schools Protocol that was agreed upon by the South African Police Service and the Department of Basic Education in 2011.
The Role of educators in the development, safety and well-being of children was over-emphasised.
The team continued to engage the management at, JS Skenjana Senior Secondary School which is also situated in Idutywa to discuss the implementation and strategies of the Safer Schools Project in the province.
The Back-to-School Roadshow is expected to continue with school visits in different areas across the Eastern Cape Province.
